Which Dog Ramp Is Right for Your Best Mate?

Choosing a dog ramp comes down to where it will be used, the height your dog needs to reach and the features that will make it comfortable for both of you. Use these questions to narrow down your options.

Where will you use the dog ramp?

Start with the main place your dog needs help accessing.

• For beds, couches and other household surfaces, explore indoor dog ramps.

• For cars, SUVs, utes and 4WDs, browse dog ramps for cars.

• For a compact option around the home, consider dog stairs and steps.

What length dog ramp should I choose?

The height of the surface affects the ramp length you need. A longer ramp generally creates a gentler incline, while a shorter ramp can become steep when placed against a high surface.

Measure:

• The height from the ground to the entry point.

• The available space extending out from that point.

• The width available for positioning the ramp.

Use Ramp Champ’s Ramp Calculator to compare the incline created by different ramp lengths.

How much weight should the ramp support?

Choose a ramp with a stated capacity above your dog’s weight. Consider the combined weight if more than one dog may use it.

Capacity is only one part of the decision. The ramp must also be wide enough for your dog to walk comfortably and suitable for the surface where it will be positioned.

What features help a dog feel comfortable using a ramp?

Look for a secure walking surface that provides suitable grip. Ramp width and incline matter too. Larger or less-confident dogs may benefit from a wider ramp and a gentler approach.

Once you have chosen a ramp, introduce it gradually and give your dog time to become familiar with it. Follow our step-by-step guide to teaching your dog to use a ramp

Should I choose a dog ramp or dog stairs?

A ramp provides a continuous incline and may suit dogs that find repeated steps difficult. Dog stairs take up less floor space and may work well for confident dogs accessing lower indoor surfaces.

Consider your dog’s size, movement, confidence and the space available. Read our detailed dog ramps and stairs comparison to compare the two options.

How do I measure for a dog ramp?

In addition to figuring out what type of dog ramp you need, it is important to measure for your dog ramp to ensure you find the correct size.
Selecting a dog ramp that is too short will result in a steep grade, which can be dangerous for your pooch.
Choosing a longer ramp will decrease the steepness of your slope and be more comfortable for your pet.
You will need to measure the following:
  1. The total height of the car/bed/couch
  2. The available distance without obstruction measuring straight out from the highest point
  3. The total usable width of the area
