Choosing dog accessories

Dog accessories only work if they fit the dog. This range covers the car (a dog car seat or booster seat, a dog seat belt tether, seat covers) and home (a dog crate, dog playpen, dog kennel or dog stroller). Start with your dog's weight, then check the size on the product page: weight limits for seats, inch sizes for crates and panels, internal dimensions for kennels. If a size is not listed, ask us before you order.

Dog cages, playpens and fences: what's the difference?

A dog cage is enclosed on all sides and suits secure resting or travel. A playpen or fence is a ring of panels that gives your dog room to move, and the panels can be rearranged to fit the space. If you are unsure, think about what you want it for. A secure spot for short periods: a cage. Room to play while you are busy: a playpen or fence.

Choosing a dog kennel

Match the kennel to your dog's size first, then to where it will sit. Wooden kennels suit a covered outdoor spot. A portable dog house is easier to move and store. Measure your dog and compare with the inside dimensions on the product page.

What pet travel accessories do I need for car trips?

The right pet travel accessories depend on your dog’s size, how they travel and what you want to make easier:

• Dog car seats & booster seats – great for smaller pooches who need their own comfy space in the car and a little extra height to enjoy the view.
• Dog travel restraints – help keep dogs secured while travelling and reduce unwanted roaming around the vehicle.
• Dog car seat covers – help protect your seats from fur, dirt, muddy paws and everyday doggy mess.
• Dog strollers – a handy option for getting out and about with smaller dogs, older dogs or pets that may not want to walk the whole way.

Consider your dog’s size and weight, your vehicle, the type of trips you take and how often you travel when choosing the right setup.

When might a dog stroller be useful?

A dog stroller or pet stroller can provide another way to get out and about with your pet when walking the entire distance isn’t practical. When comparing strollers, consider the size of the pet compartment, overall dimensions, wheel configuration, folding design and storage features. Ramp Champ’s stroller range includes both three- and four-wheel designs as well as foldable options.

What should I consider when choosing dog travel accessories?

Think about fit, comfort, compatibility, portability and ease of cleaning. For products used in the car, check how they attach to your vehicle and whether they suit the intended seating area. For portable products such as strollers, consider folded size, manoeuvrability and storage. Most importantly, check the specifications of the individual product rather than assuming all dog travel accessories work in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a dog car seat and a dog seat belt?

A dog car seat is a raised seat that sits on your car seat and holds your dog, usually with a short tether to their harness. A dog seat belt, like the Kurgo Direct to Seatbelt Tether, clips into the car's seatbelt buckle and attaches to a harness. The Kurgo Tru-Fit harness is listed for dogs up to 45kg.

Do you sell dog car seat covers?

Yes. The ZeeZ hammock and bench covers are waterproof polyester, fit vehicles with headrests and are machine washable, with slits for seatbelts. The Paw Mate XXL is a waterproof boot and rear seat cover tailored to fit most rear seats. The New Aim hammock cover also works as a barrier between the back and front seats.

What size dog booster seat do I need?

Go by your dog's weight. The Happy Ride seats are listed at 5kg, 8kg and 11kg, and the Kurgo Rover and the quilted Happy Ride safety seat in tan both go up to 13.6kg. If your dog sits close to a limit, choose the next size up. Full dimensions are on each product page.

Should I get a dog crate or a dog playpen?

A crate is an enclosed metal cage. The i.Pet crates fold flat and have three access doors and a removable tray. A playpen is a ring of 8 panels you can set up as an octagon or a square, and two sets can be joined for a bigger area. Pick the crate for an enclosed space and the playpen for room to move.

What size dog kennel will fit my dog?

Compare your dog's length and standing height with the kennel's dimensions. The ZeeZ Mutt Hutt comes in 54 x 48 x 48cm, 62 x 58 x 63cm, 84 x 73 x 80cm and 102 x 84 x 93cm (L x W x H). The i.Pet grey kennel is 98 x 68.5 x 68cm. Check the product page before you order.
