Motorcycle Ramps for Utes, Trailers and Vans

Motorcycle ramps get your bike onto a ute tray, a trailer or into a van without lifting it. The ramps on this page are single ramps: one wheel track for the bike, with folding, curved and rigid options in aluminium. Pick by two things: what the bike weighs, and how high the tray or trailer is. A higher tray needs a longer ramp so the climb stays gentle. Loading a quad, buggy or golf cart instead? See ATV ramps, which are wider and sold for four wheels.

How to Load Your Bike Onto a Ute

  • Heeve folding motorcycle ramp hooked onto a ute tray, strapped to the tow bar with its support leg down

Hook It on and Strap It

Sit the ramp tips flat on the tray and check they are not going anywhere. Strap the ramp to the vehicle, and put the support leg down if your ramp has one.

  • Rider lining a blue dirt bike up straight behind a Heeve folding motorcycle ramp on a ute

    Line the Bike Up Straight

Have your wheel chocks and tie-downs ready first. Line the bike up square to the ramp so the wheels track straight up the middle.

  • Rider walking beside the ramp pushing a dirt bike up a Heeve folding motorcycle ramp onto a ute

Push It Up from the Ground

On a narrow ramp, walk beside it on the ground and push the bike up. If you use the engine, get a mate to help: one steers, one works the throttle gently. On a wide ramp or a 3-piece set you can walk up with the bike.

Once it is up, roll the front wheel into a wheel chock and tie the bike down to the tray before you drive off.

Motorcycle Ramps Buying Guide

Choosing a Motorcycle Ramp by Bike and Vehicle

Start with two things: the bike you're loading, and what you're loading it onto.

• Dirt bikes and scooters: a single folding or curved ramp is usually all you need, pushed up from the ground.

• Road bikes: pick a ramp rated well over the bike's weight, and wider if you'd like more room for the tyre.

• Heavy road bikes and cruisers: see the heavy-duty ramps, or a ramp with a walkway beside the bike.

• Onto a ute or trailer: measure the tray or floor height first, it decides the length (see the next section).

• Into a van: a folding ramp stores flat inside next to the bike.

• No ute at all: a hitch mount carrier sits on your tow bar and comes with its own loading ramp.

How Long a Ramp You Need

Measure from the ground to the top of the tray, trailer floor or van floor where the ramp will rest. The higher that is, the longer the ramp you want, so the climb stays gentle.

A good rule of thumb is a slope of about 1 in 4: roughly 1 metre up for every 4 metres along.

• A low trailer: ramps 1m to 2m long.

• Most utes and trailers: ramps 2m to 3m long.

• High utes and lifted trays: ramps 3m to 4m long.

Every ramp's page has a "Will it reach?" check. Type your height and it tells you whether that ramp suits, and how steep it will be. Our guide understanding tray height before buying ramps goes through it step by step.

Weight Capacity: What to Check

Check the Holds figure on the listing against your bike's weight. If you'll walk up the same ramp beside the bike, add your own weight too. The weight buttons at the top of the page hide anything that won't carry it.

• Ramps with a walkway beside the bike carry more: see ramps rated 500kg to 800kg.

• 3-piece sets have a stronger middle ramp to walk on.

• For heavy road bikes, see the heavy-duty ramps.

If you load more than one bike, choose a ramp rated for the heaviest one.

Width: Riding It Up or Pushing It Up

How you load decides how wide a ramp you need.

• Pushing the bike up from the ground: a narrower ramp is fine for most dirt bike and road bike tyres.

• Walking up with the bike: choose a ramp with a walkway beside the bike track, or a 3-piece set with a middle ramp for you.

• Want more room for a wide tyre: see the wider ramps.

Each listing shows the width of the ramp, so check it against your tyre.

Curved, Folding or Straight

Curved ramps have an arch near the top, so the bike doesn't bottom out as it rolls over onto the tray. They suit low bikes and higher trays.

Folding ramps fold in half to store in the ute, trailer or van, and are the easiest to carry.

Straight, rigid ramps don't fold. They're simple, strong and quick to set up.

Tri-fold and 3-piece ramps give you a wider loading area, with room to walk up with the bike.

More in our guide curved vs straight loading ramps.

Connection, Grip and Storage

How the ramp holds onto your vehicle matters. Basic ramps rest on the tray on soft coated tips that protect it and grip. Heavier-duty ramps use a solid loading plate and a locking pin, so the ramp can't move while you load. Either way, strap the ramp to the vehicle before you start.

Look for an anti-slip surface for wet and muddy days, and support legs if your ramp has them: they stop the middle flexing under the bike.

Aluminium keeps the ramp light enough to lift and carry on your own, and a folding ramp stores flat. More in our motorcycle ramp buyer's guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a ramp hold my heavy bike and me as well?

Check the Holds figure on each listing and add your own weight if you walk up the same ramp beside the bike. The weight buttons at the top of the page hide anything that won't carry it. For a heavy road bike, see the heavy-duty ramps.

How long a ramp do I need for my ute or trailer?

Measure from the ground to the top of the tray or trailer floor. The higher it is, the longer the ramp you want, so the bike isn't pushed up a steep climb. Each ramp's page has a "Will it reach?" check: type your tray height and it tells you whether that ramp suits. For high utes and lifted trays, see ramps 3m to 4m long.

Is the price for one ramp or a pair?

One ramp. Motorcycle ramps on this page are sold as a single ramp, because a bike only needs one wheel track. If you want a second ramp to walk up on, buy two, or choose a ramp with a walkway built in.

Can I walk up beside the bike?

Yes. Some ramps have a walkway next to the bike track, and 3-piece sets give you two side ramps and a wider middle ramp to walk on. The listing says so, and its Holds figure includes you.

Is my ramp wide enough for my tyre?

For most dirt bike and road bike tyres, yes. Each listing shows the width of the ramp: compare it with your tyre and leave some room either side. If you want more room, see the wider ramps.

Does a hitch mount carrier come with a ramp?

Yes, it comes with its own loading ramp so you can wheel the bike onto it. Check the limit on the listing against your bike, and your tow bar receiver before you order. Ask us if you're not sure it suits your vehicle.

Can I load a motorbike into a van?

Yes, as long as the ramp reaches the van floor at a gentle angle and fits inside the van once you're loaded. A folding ramp stores flat beside the bike. Use the "Will it reach?" check on the ramp's page with your van floor height, or tell us the van and we'll suggest one.

Can I use the same ramp for my mower or quad too?

Some, yes. Tri-fold ramps and 3-piece sets are wide enough for a ride-on mower or a quad as well as a motorbike, so one set can do the lot. Check the Holds figure covers the heaviest thing you'll load. For quads, buggies and golf carts, see ATV ramps.
