Choosing a Portable Ramp

A portable ramp gets a wheelchair, walker or scooter over a step, into the house or into the car, with nothing to build. Set it down where you need it, then fold it up and take it with you. Pick the length from the height of the step, then check the width against the chair. For a ramp that stays at the doorway, see threshold ramps; for loading into a van, see van and vehicle ramps.

Single-Fold, Multi-Fold or Telescopic?

  • Wheelchair beside a folding aluminium ramp over a step at a doorway

    Single-Fold Ramp

Folds in half and carries like a suitcase. For a step or two at home.

  • Helper pushing a wheelchair up a long multi-fold ramp on a lawn

    Multi-Fold Ramp

A long ramp that folds down small. For a porch, a few steps or the car.

  • Wheelchair rolling up a pair of telescopic channel ramps into a car

    Telescopic Ramps

A pair of channel ramps that slide out to length. For loading a chair or scooter into the car.

Not sure? Tell us the step height and the chair, and we'll point you to the right ramp.

Portable Ramps Buying Guide

How Long a Ramp You Need

Measure the step from the ground to the top edge where the ramp will rest. The higher the step, the longer the ramp needs to be.

• About 1.4m of ramp for every 100mm of step (1 in 14) is gentle: easy to go up on your own.

• About 1m for every 100mm (1 in 10) is comfortable with someone pushing.

• About 800mm for every 100mm (1 in 8) suits a short step with a helper or a powered chair.

Type your step height and a length into the ramp calculator to see the slope. Public buildings use a gentler slope again; at home you pick what suits the person using it. For a few steps or a porch, see ramps 2m to 3m long and ramps 3m to 4m long.

Width: Measure the Chair

Measure the chair, walker or scooter across the outside of the wheels, then pick a ramp whose usable width is wider, with room either side. Every listing shows the width.

• Most wheelchairs and walkers fit ramps 500mm to 800mm wide.

• Wide chairs and scooters need ramps 800mm to 1000mm wide.

Side rails along the edges help keep the wheels on the ramp.

Weight: Add the Chair and the Person

Add the chair or scooter, the person in it, and anyone walking up the ramp to push, then pick a ramp rated over that. The limit is on every listing.

• Most manual wheelchairs suit ramps rated 300kg to 500kg.

• A heavy power chair or scooter with its rider may need ramps rated 500kg to 800kg.

Long ramps with support legs carry more and flex less in the middle.

Single-Fold, Multi-Fold or Telescopic

Single-fold ramps fold in half and carry by a handle, like a suitcase. They suit a step or two at home.

Multi-fold ramps fold in half along their length and across their width, so a long ramp packs down small. They suit a porch, a few steps or a car.

Telescopic channel ramps come as a pair and slide out to length. Set them the same distance apart as the wheels. They suit loading a chair or scooter into a car, not walking on.

Roll-up ramps roll up for storage, and self-supporting ramps stand on their own legs over a sill or step. More in our guide how to choose the best wheelchair ramp for your home.

Setting It Up Safely

Put the bottom of the ramp on firm, level ground and the top lip flat on the step, not on a mat or the edge of a carpet. Check the ramp sits steady before anyone uses it.

• Look for an anti-slip surface, and take care when it's wet.

• Use the support legs on a long ramp if it has them.

• When pushing a wheelchair, go up facing forward and come down backwards, with the helper below the chair.

More in how to use ramps safely in all weather.

Carrying and Storing

Check the ramp's weight and folded size on the listing against who will carry it and where it will live: the car boot, the hallway or the garage.

Carry handles, a carry bag and locking pins that hold it folded all make a ramp easier to move. If it's staying at one door, a threshold ramp may suit better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What length ramp do I need for my step?

Measure the step height. As a guide, allow about 1m of ramp for every 100mm of step when someone is pushing, and more if the person is going up on their own. So a 150mm step suits a ramp of about 1.5m. Check the slope with the ramp calculator, or tell us the height and we'll suggest a length.

How much weight will a portable ramp hold?

It depends on the ramp, and the limit is on every listing. Add the chair, the person in it and anyone walking up to push, and pick a ramp rated over that. For a heavy power chair, see ramps rated 500kg to 800kg.

My wheelchair is wide. Will it fit?

Measure across the outside of the wheels and compare it with the usable width on the listing, with room either side. For wide chairs and scooters, see ramps 800mm to 1000mm wide.

Is the price for one ramp or a pair?

Folding and multi-fold ramps are one wide ramp. Telescopic channel ramps come as a pair, one for each side of the chair, and the price is for both. Every listing shows what you get.

Can I use a portable ramp to get a wheelchair or scooter into the car?

Yes, if it's long enough for the height of the boot or floor. Car boots sit higher than a step, so the ramp needs to be longer: see ramps 2m to 3m long. For vans, see van and vehicle ramps.

Can someone with a walker use a portable ramp?

Yes. A ramp is easier than steps for many people with a walker or a walking stick. Pick a longer ramp so the slope stays gentle, and one with side rails and an anti-slip surface.

Do portable ramps need to meet Australian Standards?

Not at home. The Australian Standard sets the slope for ramps in public buildings, which is gentler than most homes need. At home, pick the slope that suits the person using it. If the ramp is for a business or a public building, talk to us first.

Can I return it if it doesn't suit?

Yes. Measure the step and the chair before you order and compare them with the listing. If it still doesn't suit, you have 100 days to return it for free. Not sure? Ask us first.
