Dog Stairs and Steps for Beds, Couches and Cars

Dog stairs and steps help your dog reach the couch, the bed or the car without jumping. They suit small and older dogs, and dogs that struggle with height. The range includes foam stairs with washable covers, foldable plastic steps that slide under furniture, and aluminium stairs for the car. Check the step height and weight limit on each product. If your dog needs a smooth slope instead, see dog ramps.

Dog Stairs & Steps Buying Guide

Choosing by Height

Measure from the floor to the top of the bed, couch or car seat, then pick stairs whose top step sits just under it. Every listing shows the top step height.

• For a couch, a low bed or a car seat: stairs 30cm to 50cm high.

• For a higher bed or an SUV boot: stairs 50cm to 80cm high.

• Higher than that, like a 4WD or a ute tray: a ramp is the better choice. See dog ramps for cars.

Step Size and How Many Steps

Smaller steps are easier on small dogs, short legs and sore joints, so a small dog climbs without jumping. More steps over the same height means a gentler climb.

If your dog struggles with even small steps, or is recovering from surgery, a ramp takes stepping out of it altogether: see dog ramps.

Weight Limits: What to Check

Check the limit on the listing against your dog, with some room to spare.

• Foam stairs suit small, light dogs. The firmer the foam, the more it carries.

• Folding plastic steps and aluminium car stairs carry more.

• For a big or heavy dog, see stairs that suit large dogs, or a ramp rated well over their weight: dog ramps.

Foam, Plastic, Wood or Aluminium

Foam stairs are soft and quiet, with a cover that unzips for the washing machine.

Folding plastic steps are light to move from room to room, have non-slip steps and fold flat. See folding stairs.

Wooden stairs with carpeted steps are sturdy and look like furniture.

Aluminium car stairs have wide steps and are made to stand outside the car.

Stairs for the Car

For a car seat or a low boot, folding steps reach far enough and fold flat to travel with you.

For an SUV boot, aluminium car stairs with wide steps are steadier outside on the ground.

For a high 4WD or a ute tray, a ramp is easier on your dog than stairs: see dog ramps for cars.

Getting Your Dog Used to Stairs

Most dogs take to stairs quickly, especially if they already use stairs at home. Others need a little encouragement.

• Put the stairs against the bed or couch and let your dog sniff them.

• Use treats on each step, one step at a time.

• Keep it short and happy, and never lift them onto the top step.

The same method works for ramps: see teach your dog to use a dog ramp.

Frequently Asked Questions

How high do dog stairs need to be?

Measure from the floor to the top of the couch, bed or car floor, then pick stairs whose top step sits just under it. Every listing shows the top step height. Start with stairs 30cm to 50cm high for couches and low beds, or stairs 50cm to 80cm high for higher beds and SUV boots.

Will dog stairs reach into a 4WD or ute?

Usually not. Stairs suit hatchbacks, wagons, SUVs with a lower floor and side doors. For a high tailgate or tray, a longer dog ramp for cars is the better pick.

What is the weight limit for dog stairs?

It depends on the stairs: every listing shows its limit. Foam stairs suit small, light dogs; folding plastic steps and aluminium car stairs carry more. If your dog is near the top of a limit, or the listing doesn't state one, ask us before you order.

Foam or plastic dog stairs: which is better?

Foam stairs are soft and light, with a washable cover. Folding plastic steps fold flat for storage and wipe clean. Pick foam for a soft feel on low furniture, and plastic if you want to fold them away or take them in the car.

Are dog stairs good for older dogs?

Yes. Stairs take the strain out of jumping for senior dogs, small breeds and dogs with limited mobility, and the non-slip surfaces help them feel steady. If your dog has a joint condition, ask your vet whether stairs or a ramp suits them better.

Should I choose dog stairs or a dog ramp?

Stairs take up less floor space and suit confident dogs reaching lower furniture. A ramp gives a continuous incline and suits dogs that find repeated steps hard. Our guide to dog stairs or ramps goes through both.

Do dog stairs fold away?

Many do: plastic steps and aluminium car stairs fold flat for storage and travel. See folding stairs. Foam stairs don't fold, but they're light and easy to move between the bed and the couch.

How do I get my dog to use dog stairs?

Put the stairs against the bed or couch, let your dog sniff them, then use treats on each step, one step at a time. Keep it short and happy. Our guide teach your dog to use a dog ramp uses the same method.
