Choosing a Van Ramp

A van ramp gets a wheelchair, scooter, trolley or motorbike into the back of a van, a people mover or a car boot. There are two kinds: a fitted ramp that stays on the van and swings out of the way like a second door, and a portable ramp that folds or slides down and travels with you. Pick the length from the height of the van floor, then check the width and the weight it carries. We can fit a van ramp in most major cities: ask for an installation quote. For steps at home, see portable ramps.

Fitted, Mobile or Folding?

  • Power wheelchair on a fitted aluminium ramp at the back of a van

    Fitted Swivel Ramp

Stays on the van, folds up inside the back doors and swings aside. For loading every day.

  • Folding aluminium van ramp resting on the floor at the back of a van

    Mobile Van Ramp

No fitting: rests on the van floor, folds in half and lifts out. For loading now and then.

  • Man pushing a wheelchair up a folding ramp into a car

    Folding Wheelchair Ramp

Light and folds small to travel in the boot. For a wheelchair into a car or people mover.

Not sure? Tell us the van, the floor height and what you're loading, and we'll point you to the right ramp.

Van & Vehicle Ramps Buying Guide

Fitted or Portable?

A fitted van ramp bolts to the van floor and stays there. It folds up inside the back doors and swings out of the way like a second door, so you can still load from the back. Most lift out with quick-release bolts when you need the whole floor. We can fit one in most major cities: ask for an installation quote.

A portable ramp is carried in the van and set down when you need it: folding ramps fold in half, telescopic ramps slide out to length, and roll-up ramps roll up small.

Pick fitted if you load every day, and portable if you load now and then or use more than one vehicle.

How Long a Ramp You Need

Measure from the ground to the van floor, or the boot lip, where the ramp will rest. The higher the floor, the longer the ramp needs to be.

• Pushing a trolley, a scooter or a motorbike up, a slope of about 1 in 4 works: roughly 1m of ramp for every 250mm of height.

• For a wheelchair, go as long as the van and the space behind it allow. A helper pushing a wheelchair finds a gentler slope much easier.

Most vans suit ramps 2m to 3m long; high vans and trucks suit ramps 3m to 4m long. Check the slope with the ramp calculator.

Width and the Van Door

Measure the van's door opening, and the chair, trolley or scooter across its widest point. The ramp needs to fit the opening, and what you load needs to fit the ramp, with room either side.

• Most wheelchairs fit ramps 500mm to 800mm wide.

• Scooters, trikes and wide loads suit ramps 800mm to 1000mm wide or over 1000mm.

Check the height of the door opening too, so a fitted ramp folds away inside it.

Weight: Add Everything Going Up

Add the chair, scooter or load, the person on it and anyone walking up beside it, then pick a ramp rated over that. Every listing shows the limit, and for a pair of ramps it says whether that's per pair.

• Most wheelchairs and scooters suit ramps rated 300kg to 500kg.

• Heavy power chairs and heavy loads suit ramps rated 500kg to 800kg or more.

Pair, One Wide Ramp, or a 3rd Piece

Channel ramps come as a pair, one for each side of the wheels. Set them the same distance apart as the wheels. They're light and suit a scooter or a wheelchair with a helper.

A single wide ramp takes everything at once and is easier to walk up beside. Fitted van ramps are one wide ramp.

Some fitted ramps take a 3rd piece extension for a higher floor. Every listing shows what you get.

Loading Safely

Park on level ground with the handbrake on. Make sure the ramp sits flat and locked on the van floor before anything goes up.

• Push a wheelchair up facing forward and bring it down backwards, with the helper below the chair.

• Strap loads and chairs down inside the van before you drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a van ramp fit my van?

Most will, if the length suits the floor height and the width suits the door. Measure from the ground to the van floor, and the door opening's width and height, then compare them with the listing. Tell us the van make and model and we'll check it for you.

What length van ramp do I need?

Measure from the ground to the van floor. Pushing a load up, allow about 1m of ramp for every 250mm of height. For a wheelchair, go longer if you can. Most vans suit ramps 2m to 3m long.

What is the difference between a fitted and a portable van ramp?

A fitted ramp bolts to the van floor, folds up inside the back doors and swings aside so you can still load from the back. A portable ramp is carried in the van and set down when you need it. See fitted van ramps.

Can you install a van ramp?

Yes, in most major cities. Ask for an installation quote with your van's make and model.

Is the price for one ramp or a pair?

Channel ramps that slide out to length usually come as a pair, and the price is for both. Fitted and folding van ramps are one wide ramp. Every listing shows what you get.

Can I take a fitted van ramp out?

Most fitted van ramps lift out with quick-release bolts, so one person can remove it when you need the whole floor. The listing says how each one comes out.

Can I load a motorbike or a mobility scooter into my van?

Yes. Check the ramp's limit covers the bike or scooter plus anyone walking up with it, and that it's long enough for the van floor. For motorbikes, see motorcycle ramps too.

My trike or scooter is wide. Is there a wider ramp?

Yes. Measure it across the widest point and see ramps 800mm to 1000mm wide or over 1000mm. A single wide ramp suits a trike better than a pair of channel ramps.
